CPI delegation at Wikimania 2008

On July 18th and 19th 2008, the Wikimedia International Conference, commonly referred to as Wikimania, was held at the Bibliotheca Alexandria in Alexandria, Egypt. It is a conference for users of the Wiki projects operated by the Wiki Foundation. The CPI was represented by Ms. Nevine Tewfik and Mohamed Fathy along with three Egyptian Youth Participants.

The event tackled the phenomenon of Wiki, an important and participative tool generated by new technologies. The tool allows for the cooperative generation of content and knowledge. Used mostly by young people, the wiki paradigm has changed many institutions including education and industry. The main topics of the presentations and discussions included Wikimedia Foundation projects, Open Source Software (OSS) and the development of Wikis.

Wikimania resulted in a good opportunity for the CPI to share knowledge and disseminate its objectives. It became clear during the conference that there is a strong need for activating such a tool in Egypt to support knowledge sharing. Furthermore, it was also noticeable that there are hardly Arabic written Wikis. The need to work with Arabic content using Wikis is therefore essential.
